New Tab Page Ads Reporting Follow
💡 Note: The New Tab Page ad performance measurement discussed in this article will be gradually rolled out, starting May 2025.
This article covers the way we measure ad performance for New Tab Page Sponsored images and how Brave keeps that information anonymous and private.
What are sponsored images?
Sponsored images are full-page visual ads that appear as the background image on newly opened tabs in Brave. They either promote a Brave product or service, or those of an advertiser.
These ads are a privacy-first way for advertisers to raise awareness of their brand and products, and for Brave to earn revenue. This revenue allows Brave to continue offering its products for free to everyone.
How does Brave ensure anonymity with ad reporting?
In order to protect your privacy, and ensure ad views / ad engagement cannot be tied to an individual, we send reporting requests through a proxy that hides your IP address.
This ensures Brave will not have enough information to determine who you are (not that we even want to), either as an individual or as a singled-out member of the group of users sending a report to our server. Additionally, we can’t tell that two reports about two different ads are coming from the same person. This is by design, as we have no need for this information. Essentially, Brave has only a count of Brave users who interacted with an ad, but not enough information about these users to single them out from everyone else.
What data do you collect when I interact with new tab page ads?
In order to help advertisers measure the impact of their advertising, and decide whether to spend more with Brave in the future, we provide advertisers with an aggregate report of how Brave users as a group interact with their ads.
This report includes:
- How many users saw their ad
- How many users clicked their ad
Producing this report requires us to send an anonymous report from your browser to Brave’s servers whenever you view or click on such an ad. This in turn allows us to determine:
- Which ad was involved
- The country you are coming from (derived from your IP address)
- Your browser version
- Your operating system (e.g. Windows or Android)
