There are some key differences between Brave Ads and traditional digital advertising:

1. Brave Ads are privacy-preserving. Traditional advertising requires information about you, your behavior, your browsing history, location, and more, to be collected by advertisers in order for them to target their ads to you. In contrast, when a Brave Ad is matched to you, it is done on your own device, by your own device, inside Brave itself. Your personal data never leaves your own device.
2. You can earn and get paid. By enabling Brave Rewards, you can earn Basic Attention Token (BAT) for the Brave Ads you see. You'll receive 70% of the ad revenue that Brave receives from advertisers. You can then use your BAT to buy gift cards, send to content creators, exchange for other currencies (both fiat and crypto), and more.
3. Brave Ads don't get in the way of content. There are several different kinds of Brave Ads you can choose to see. For example, there are notification ads, background images on the New Tab Page, ads in the Brave News feed, among others. You can find a list of the different ad formats here. Unlike traditional ads, Brave Ads don't get in the way of content you're trying to watch (like traditional video ads or commercials) or read online (like banner ads).
   
   

Brave uses anonymous-but-accountable ad confirmation events to allow us to report campaign performance and delivery for advertisers without tracking users and without personal data leaving the user’s device. Additional technical information about the security and privacy model used for ad confirmation is available on GitHub. In addition to accounting via confirmations, it is important to gain anonymous insights into how Brave users engage with ads, e.g. with respect to top-level advertising segments like “Technology & Computing” or “Travel”.

To that end we use privacy-preserving analytics that allow us to calculate high-level statistics about ad usage without gaining insight into any information about particular individual users. The region/country setting for Brave Ads is inferred by Fastly on the edge using the IP address of the ad catalog request.

You are rewarded for merely having a Brave Ad appear on your screen. You don't need to click or engage with it if you don't want to. However, if you're interested in an ad and what it has to offer, you should definitely click on the ad.

There are several ways we prevent harmful ads from ever being served on the platform:

1. Third-party ads require data collection in order to function as expected. Brave blocks third party ads and trackers, including ad exchanges and networks that commonly deliver malware and malvertising.
2. The same Brave Shields that protect users as they browse the web are active when you open up a webpage via a Brave Ad.
3. Advertisers are required to go through an approval process before they are able to set up campaigns with Brave.

Please note that ad campaigns vary by country, and by operating system. In some countries, there may be fewer ads observed throughout the month based on campaign size, delivery pacing, operating systems, content categories and that advertisers have selected to run their ads to. As we continue to generate additional demand for countries where Brave Ads are available, the consistency should improve over time.

Please note that this setting is a ceiling rather than a floor. That is, it does not dictate how many ads you are guaranteed to  see per hour, but the maximum number of notifications Brave is allowed to show you per hour. This number will always fall between 0 and X, inclusive.

Many crypto-related companies like advertising through Brave because of its audience, and Brave's openness to Web3. Additionally, some Brave Ads are matched to your interests. So, if you're someone who's interested in crypto, you may see more crypto-focused advertisements.
