Note: Before attempting the troubleshooting steps below, please try restarting the browser as well as restarting your computer/device. Sometimes, the updater can get "stuck" in place and a quick reboot often resolves this issue.

If you've restarted the browser and/or your device already and are still getting update errors, please proceed to the troubleshooting steps below.

We have seen that a small group of Windows users were unable to update automatically to the newest versions of Brave and wanted to provide instructions to fix this situation if you're stuck on an older version of Brave.

This appears to be related to users who have downloaded the installer named brave_installer_x64.exe or brave_installer_x86.exe from Github. Unfortunately this installer was not intended for direct
installation without specific configuration parameters included, and for this reason we no longer upload it to our GitHub releases. Users should be installing Brave with the files BraveBrowserSetup.exe,BraveBrowserSetup32.exe, which will correctly configure Brave to
contact our update servers and automatically update to the newest versions when they are released. This is the setup file that gets run when users go to brave.com/download.

To fix your install if you are stuck on an older version of Brave, we recommend the following steps:

1. Make a backup copy of all your user data (if desired) by navigating to: %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\ and copying the User Data folder somewhere safe.and making a copy of the Brave-Browser folder somewhere safe.
2. Uninstall Brave using  Add or Remove Programsbuilt into Windows
3. Reboot your machine
4. Delete any remaining the files and directories in the C:\program files (x86)\BraveSoftware\ folder (if any exist)
5. Re-install Brave from https://brave.com/download
6. Verify channel is now correct by:
   1. Opening Regedit
   2. Browse to: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\BraveSoftware\Update\ClientState\{AFE6A462-C574-4B8A-AF43-4CC60DF4563B}
   3. Verify name ap has data set to x64-rel for Windows x64, or x86-rel for Windows x86 platform (if you are using Brave Beta, Brave Dev or Brave Nightly this will be a different value, such as x64-be, x64-dev, or x64-ni.)
