What are New Tab Page Sponsored Images? Follow
Sponsored images are full-page visual ads that appear as the background image on newly opened tabs in Brave. They either promote a Brave product or service, or those of an advertiser.
These ads are a privacy-first way for advertisers to raise awareness of their brand and products, and for Brave to earn revenue. This revenue allows Brave to continue offering its products for free to everyone.
How does Brave ensure anonymity with ad reporting?
To ensure ad reporting cannot be tied to an individual, Brave uses Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP), an Internet standard designed to protect user privacy that we helped develop. Reports are encrypted and sent through an independent relay operated by Fastly.
Fastly can see your IP address but not the report contents, while Brave can process the report without receiving your IP address. This prevents Brave from tying an ad view or interaction to an individual user, or from linking separate reports as coming from the same person. This is by design: Brave only needs aggregate counts of how users interact with ads.
What data do you collect when I interact with new tab page ads?
In order to help advertisers measure the impact of their advertising, and decide whether to spend more with Brave in the future, we provide advertisers with an aggregate report of how Brave users as a group interact with their ads.
This report includes:
- How many users saw their ad
- How many users clicked their ad
Producing this report requires us to send an anonymous report from your browser to Brave’s servers whenever you view or click on such an ad. This in turn allows us to determine:
- Which ad was involved
- Your browser version
- Your operating system (e.g. Windows or Android)
